WELCOME TO FORT MCMURRAY
Fort McMurray is the largest community in the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo. It is located near the Athabasca and Clearwater rivers in northeastern Alberta and lies near the center of the oil sands deposits.
Fort McMurray was named after Hudson’s Bay Company, Factor William McMurray. Its primary function was fur-trading and transportation connecting Edmonton to the northern country.
Modern Fort McMurray was born in the mid-1960s when Suncor Energy started construction to extract oil from the oil sands. The town grew exponentially by the mid-1970s and continues to grow.
Fort McMurray today, is modern and vibrant, with a thriving cultural and artistic community. It is a place where you will want to live, work, stay and play!
